The goal of this project was to bring awareness to a designer or movement that is often overlooked in the history of graphic design. I chose to research Ihap Hulusi Görey, the first Turkish graphic designer because of my Turkish heritage. To begin the zine (below), I started with a series of sketches for potential layouts of text and image. I decided to use a 4 column grid as the basis of the design. After examining Görey's work, I felt a red and cream color palette best complimented his designs. My goal for the zine was to showcase his work, while also providing information about his life and artistic process. Because I wanted to highlight as much of his work as possible, I chose to create a collage of his pieces for the front and back covers. The zine features my own copy, based on the research I conducted.
In addition to the zine, I also created a poster (below) for an imaginary exhibition of Görey's work. I began by creating sketches that incorporated elements of his work and decided I wanted to use a self-portrait he created as the central image in my work. This image worked particularly well because the viewer looks in the direction of the figure's gaze and is directed to read the title. I also took elements from the collage I made for the zine and decided to incorporate them as a border for the poster. Then, to give the poster additional texture, I lowered the transparency of the red background so that some of the imagery showed through. This encourages the viewer to come up the poster and take a closer look, therefore creating visual interest at several distances from the poster.
