CowaLUNGa® Charity Bike Tour is a yearly fundraising event in which hundreds of participants spend the weekend biking 18, 30, 65 or 135 miles through Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. The event raises funds for Respiratory Health Association’s programs, which support people living with lung disease and promote clean air.
After presenting three options, the Special Events team chose the vintage travel poster concept I created. I paired the visuals with the tagline “Breathe in Scenic Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin”. This was meant to channel the taglines from vintage airline, train route, and tourism posters but also relate back to lung health and clean air, the mission of the organization.
The design features four important locations along the Cowalunga bike route: Gurnee Mills, Kettle Moraine, Twin Lakes, and Williams Bay. To highlight these locations, I placed small illustrated scenes of each of the locations within picture frames. In the background, I have a larger scene of a biker traveling along the route. Because of the name of the event and fondness from riders, I included cows in the pasture behind the trees. To reinforce the vintage theme, I selected a retro script typeface and incorporated a paper texture over the artwork.
